Even the most passionate animal lovers have to stop and think before they introduce a new pet into their households. You need the right kind of living arrangements, lifestyle, financial situation, and time to devote to a new puppy. If you have thought through these conditions, and still are on the lookout for a puppy with lots of personality, that doesn't need much room, and has a lot of love to give, you might consider the Maltese puppies Texas dog lovers are raving about.

This little dog breed has been around thousands of years. The ancient Greeks and Romans revered them and believed they had the power to heal. They would put the little dogs on the pillows of ailing loved ones. The dogs were favorites of English Queens Elizabeth and Victoria. They finally made their way to the United States in the early 1800s when they were introduced at Westminster Kennel Club shows.

These little dogs love people and will ham it up for the attention at the drop of a hat. They aren't much trouble to train because they are such people pleasers. Treats can get them to cooperate most of the time. Early socialization is important. They should be exposed to a variety of sounds, sights, people, and experiences to develop their naturally curious and exuberant natures.

The Maltese is an active breed. They are playful dogs that enjoy leisurely walks. Since their bones aren't fully developed until the age of about eight months, most vets recommend waiting until then to take them for long hikes. The Maltese is a house dog. They cannot tolerate excessive cold or heat.

A lot of breeders discourage families with little kids from purchasing one of these little dogs. Even though they have a lot of energy, and are generally very healthy animals, they are still quite small. They can be injured if dropped or stepped on. Maltese are more successful in homes with older children and adults who know how to handle them.

Because they don't have under coats, shedding is not a big issue with these animals. The fur, which is white and silky, will mat. The white coat will become unsightly if it is allowed to get dirty. Maltese tend to have tear stains on their faces. Wiping them with a damp cloth should get rid of them. The dogs need daily brushing and combing. Special attention should be paid to their nails and ears.

These are generally healthy dogs that tend to live full lives. If you work with a reputable breeder, you should expect to see health clearances for the parents of your puppy. You will want to see that genetic diseases and conditions, like von Willebrand's disease, elbow and hip dysplasia, and hypothyroidism have been cleared.

Most pets are family members. They have personalities and idiosyncrasies just like the families they live with. Finding a pet that is a good fit for your family is important for the humans and the canines.
