Radon is a gas that is odorless and colorless and it occurs in the atmosphere in really small quantities. The gas is naturally generated from the breakdown of materials which are radioactive within the surface of the earth. The gas is normally found in the atmosphere or in the air but it can find ways into houses or other buildings. It is important to remediate the gas if this occurs because it is very dangerous and can cause cancer. Here are facts regarding Maryland radon mitigation contractors.

When radon exists in small amounts, it is not always dangerous. It is only dangerous when a given level is exceeded in its concentration. It is best to often conduct tests to be sure of the radon amount in the house. Test kits that can be purchased easily from the market so that tests can be performed exist. It is best to employ an expert if one is unsure of their own skills.

Even though it may sound easy, buying and installing a radon mitigation kit is not an easy task. There are several steps that one must follow closely and strictly so as to achieve good results. The basic goal of the system is eliminating the gas from the building. Since the gas emanates from the ground, mitigation using a kit involves drilling a hole into the foundation of the house and actively sucking the gas out.

The sucked gas is then removed from the home through the roof. To do this, pipes are supposed to be installed from the foundation up to the roof. The pipes being installed must have proper sealing to keep the gas from leaking into the house. Failure to do this leads to counter-productivity since the gas will end up in the house anyway.

Knowing the radon levels in the house is important before conducting any step included in the mitigation process. Therefore, a radon detector should be used to test the whole house first. Detectors exist in different prices and they can be purchased easily from a home depot. However, purchasing a long term detector is recommendable.

Another important factor that one needs to know about is the age of the house. Knowing the age of the house is important to help determine how the installation will be done. Houses that were built before 1970s most likely have fills that are not ideal. That means that the fills are dense and cannot let gas out beneath the house. This can make it hard to suck gas out.

Thorough planning should be conducted as it is important before putting the gas sucking pipes beneath the house. The width of pipes used should range within a diameter of 3 to 4 inches. This means that the holes being drilled inside the house should be wide enough to house the pipes.

Including a fan in the whole set up is important. Usually, installation of fans is done to pool the gas if a leakage happens. The fan should not be positioned near the living room. Having it installed outside the house, in the attic, or in the garage is preferable.
