There are a number of techniques that have been developed that may be employed in prepping and cleaning a surface among other applications. Sponge blasting is among the most efficient and popular techniques employed in surface cleaning and preparation. This technique is categorized under blasting techniques that utilize abrasive media in cleaning. In this case, the utilized abrasive media is sponge. When in search of Sponge blasting OH should be given priority.

There are different kinds of sponge that can be used as an abrasive for cleaning surfaces. In most cases, composite of open-cell, polyurethane foam and micro-abrasives are used. These foams absorb rebounding energy, ensuring that cleaning is done effectively. They also reduce ricocheting and allow for less extensive containment. Since rebound energy is absorbed by the sponge, damage to adjacent surfaces is usually minimized.

Blasting equipment employed in the process is much similar to one used in other blasting processes. Normally, the media being used is put in one chamber and then it is pressurized prior to being propelled through an output nozzle. For the cleaning activity to be effective, the media is normally mixed with water. As the abrasive media is ejected through the nozzle, it emerges with high speed and could be dangerous.

There are a number of benefits that come from this process. Reduced fugitive emission is one of the benefits associated with sponge blasting. Usually, during the cleaning process, the sponge soaks and absorbs a lot of dust and other debris released from the surface during cleaning. The dust released is soaked in the water hence it is not blown into the environment.

This makes the work place safer. The lack of dust generation is safe for the environment and the person operating the machine. Other methods such as sand blasting are rarely used because they release too much dust into the environment. Dust emission can be a major health hazard to people who are around the work site. For instance, dust from sandblasting often causes silicosis, a serious lung condition.

Sponge is a soft substance. As such, there are reduced chances of injuries to an operator of the equipment. The material is not capable of causing much injury in the event it comes in contact with an animal or a person. Although injuries from blasting are only minor, it is compulsory to put on protective clothing when using the machine. Individuals have to put on particulate helmets so as to cushion their heads against debris moving fast in the air.

In order to protect other parts of the body, one should wear gloves, boots and an apron. Before operating the machines one should wear protective gear. There are set guidelines that ought to be adhered to strictly when operating the machines during the entire process. One such safety precaution is to always direct the nozzle towards the surface being cleaned.

Containment procedures also need to be put up beforehand. Although the procedure leads to little wastage of material, the materials produced have to be correctly disposed. There exist instances in which the abrasive media may be reused. There also are chances of recycling media.
